Understanding Apple Family Sharing and Shared Purchases

Blog · 3 min read

Apple Family Sharing is one of those features that sounds straightforward but has quite a few nuances. If you're sharing purchases across your household, it's worth understanding exactly how it works — and where the hidden costs can creep in.

What Is Family Sharing?

Family Sharing lets up to six family members share access to App Store purchases, Apple subscriptions, iCloud storage, and more — all without sharing a single Apple ID. One person acts as the family organiser and manages the group.

What Can You Share?

  • App Store and iTunes purchases — Most apps, music, films, and TV shows (though some developers opt out)
  • Apple subscriptions — Apple Music Family, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple One
  • iCloud+ storage — Share a single storage plan across the family
  • Apple Books purchases
  • Location sharing via Find My

What Can't You Share?

Not everything transfers across family accounts:

  • In-app purchases — These are generally tied to the account that bought them
  • Consumable purchases — Things like game currency or one-time-use items
  • Some third-party subscriptions — Even if bought through the App Store, not all subscriptions support family sharing
  • Apps that developers have opted out of sharing

The Hidden Cost Trap

Here's what catches many families out: all purchases are billed to the family organiser's payment method. That means when your teenager buys a game or your partner subscribes to an app, the charge lands on your card.

You can enable Ask to Buy for children under 18, which sends a notification to the organiser before any purchase goes through. But for adult family members, there's no such safeguard — purchases go straight through.

How to Set Up Family Sharing

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top, then Family Sharing
  3. Tap Set Up Your Family
  4. Follow the prompts to invite family members

Managing Shared Purchase Visibility

Worried about family members seeing everything you've bought? You can hide individual purchases from your family:

  1. Open the App Store
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Purchased
  3. Swipe left on any app and tap Hide

Is Family Sharing Worth It?

If your household has multiple Apple devices, Family Sharing almost always saves money. A single Apple One Family plan, for example, bundles several services at a fraction of what individual subscriptions would cost. The key is keeping track of what everyone's spending.
